The Do's & Don'ts to Mastering Denim on Denim

How To Style Denim on Denim

Are you seeing double? We sure are. Denim on denim is no longer the fashion faux pas it once was. In fact, it’s a look anyone can master – with a few simple rules and a little imagination.

Whether you’re putting together a casual OOTD or a fun date night look, (double) denim’s got you covered. With the right shades and the right shoes this bold trend could become your new go-to. It’s okay if it’s your first rodeo as long as you don’t look like you’re going to one! Here are some fresh ways to style your double denim.

If you’re new to the “Canadian Tuxedo”, the best place to start is in your own closet. There’s a good chance you already own a few denim pieces so start playing around with them. Since denim doesn’t have to mean blue, grab a pair of black or white jeans and a chambray top. Or a denim jacket and a jean skirt. These are items you’re already comfortable wearing, even if they’re not usually paired together. Shopping your closet is also a great way to decide it’s time for another denim piece, like this cute jean jacket from Madewell. (Fact: you can never have too much denim.)

Keep in mind that darker washes tend to be more slimming than lighter washes, so pair lighter chambray tops with your darker wash jeans.

Sometimes head-to-toe denim doesn’t require pairing at all. Picture an adorable denim dress, like this one from Lulus, or a fitted jumpsuit. These denim one-pieces might quickly become your busy day faves. Easily style a jumper with some of your most loved-accessories. With cute slides or wedges like the versatile Patricia, you’re set for the workday or the weekends.

Keep the denim look simple. Avoid adding anything that could come off as gaudy or tacky.

Trends come and go, but there are a few timeless denim classics that work anytime. Mixing traditional with trendy is a great way to update your look. Elevate a basic denim jacket with edgier raw hem jean shorts for a true blue winner.

When doubling down on denim, make sure the washes and weights of the fabrics are different from each other. Matchy matchy doesn’t work here.

Feeling extra confident? Maybe it’s time to tear it up. Distressed, studded or embellished denim pieces add dimension to your ‘fit. Add some splatter paint, crystals or patches to make it more fun and create your very own unique piece.

A few holes is the goal- try not to overdo it. Too many rips or embellishments and your denim on denim look becomes a don’t.

Accessorizing is key when it comes to pulling off double denim looks. Depending on the vibe you’re going for, level up the look by accessorizing your denim ensemble with one or two main pieces. For summer, we love pairing denim with our Haru Blue Shoe, a bold colored scarf, or statement necklace!

As with anything fashion, the most important thing is to have fun. You got this, you blue jean baby.
